How to Find the Right Centrifuge Accessories: Carriers, Adapters, and More
Published March 19, 2026Getting centrifuge accessories wrong isn’t just an inconvenience. The wrong carrier leaves tubes sitting loose. The wrong adapter can change how a sample separates. Even small fit issues introduce variables that can affect result consistency, which is why compatibility matters before anything goes into the rotor.
Most centrifuge manufacturers leave this problem to the customer: cross-reference your rotor model, check the adapter specs, verify the carrier dimensions, hope nothing was discontinued. It’s a process that takes longer than it should and leaves room for error.
The sections below explain what each accessory type does, why the fit matters, and how to find what works with your centrifuge without the guesswork.
Carriers, Adapters, and Rotors: What Each One Does
These three terms get used interchangeably in conversation but refer to distinct components with different jobs.
- Centrifuge Rotors: The rotor is the spinning assembly inside the centrifuge. It determines sample capacity, centrifugation angle, and maximum speed. Most clinical centrifuges ship with a rotor installed and configured for the most common tube sizes in that application. Replacement rotors are available when a rotor reaches end of life or when a workflow change requires a different configuration.
- Centrifuge Carriers: Carrier and buckets are the holders that attach to or sit within the rotor. They determine which tube sizes and volumes fit into each position. A centrifuge designed to handle 10 mL tubes ships with carriers sized accordingly. Smaller tubes require either a different carrier or an adapter placed inside the existing one.
- Centrifuge Adapters/Inserts: Adapters and inserts drop into carriers to accommodate narrower, shorter, or lower-volume tubes than the carrier’s default opening was designed for. If a centrifuge handles 10 mL tubes out of the box but a workflow requires 3 mL microtubes or pediatric samples, the right adapter seats those tubes correctly without replacing the carrier or the centrifuge.
Each layer needs to fit the one below it. A carrier that doesn’t seat properly in the rotor can create imbalance. An adapter that doesn’t hold the tube snugly can introduce movement during the spin. Both can affect separation quality and, depending on the application, can affect downstream results.
Three Ways to Find Compatible Accessories on the Drucker Diagnostics Site:
Start from the accessory. If you know the type of accessory you need but want to confirm which centrifuge models it fits, browse the accessories catalog and filter by compatible centrifuge model. Every product listing includes a compatible centrifuges panel that shows exactly which instruments the accessory was designed for.
Start from the centrifuge. If you know your model, go to its product page and look for the compatible accessories section. This lists every carrier, adapter, insert, and rotor available for that instrument — no cross-referencing required.
Start from the tube. If you’re working from a tube spec rather than a product name, the accessories catalog can be filtered by tube volume (in mL) or tube diameter (in mm). Enter the dimension and the results narrow to accessories that fit, which is useful when standardizing tubes across a lab or adopting a new collection protocol.
One Thing Worth Confirming Before You Order
Some accessories note compatibility with specific rotor generations: injection-molded versus legacy metal, for example. This matters for centrifuge models that have been in use for several years, where hardware can differ between older and newer units. If you’re ordering carriers for an instrument that’s been in service for a while, confirm the rotor type before purchasing. The product listing will specify which generation applies.
