Centrifuge Safety Tips

Centrifuges are powerful diagnostic tools. However, their high speeds and sensitive components come with the risk of injury if not operated and maintained properly. The majority of all centrifuge accidents result from improper use. To help prevent injury, users should follow these safety tips:

1. Always place the centrifuge on a flat, stable surface

All centrifuges should be operated on a smooth, level surface or approved centrifuge stand. Do not move the centrifuge while it is plugged in or running. Leave appropriate space around the centrifuge and between centrifuges, as directed by the manufacturer.

2. Before operating the centrifuge, check the rotor

Do not open the lid until the rotor has come to a complete stop. If the rotor is loose or does not rotate freely, do not operate the centrifuge. Rotors that show evidence of damage or corrosion are to be taken out of service immediately.

3. Do not use damaged centrifuges or accessories

Centrifuges and accessories that show signs of damage are not safe to operate and should not be used. If your unit is damaged, please contact Drucker Diagnostics at for repair or replacement.

4. Follow manufacturer instructions

Do not attempt to exceed the rotor’s maximum speed or g-force. Use only approved equipment; “mixing and matching” tubes or other accessories is not recommended and could result in inaccurate spins, damage to the unit, or injury to the user.

5. Use care when handling toxic or radioactive substances

Extreme care should be taken if handling substances that are known to be toxic, radioactive, or contaminated with pathogenic microorganisms. Always use appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE).

6. Always properly clean and disinfect the centrifuge

Cleaning and disinfection is recommended every 6 months, or whenever there is a spill or tube breakage. Drucker centrifuges are disinfected with isopropyl alcohol or a 10% (5500 PPM) bleach solution.

7. Ensure that tubes or containers are properly balanced

Centrifuges must contain a balanced load to work properly and produce the best results. Out–of–balance loads may break glass test tubes, leading to unsatisfactory separation or operator injury. Use the following rules when loading the rotor:
